Estically, I agree that canopies are gay. That's why I like the toneau cover Looks better than a canopy, and still keeps things dry. They're also good for keeping things secure. I have a locking tailgate handle, so my box is totally secure.
I've looked at those North Shore racks, and they are look like the very best product on the market.

You've got 2 options. The first is to do like I did, and build a toneau cover for the truck bed, so that you've still got storage for gear. However, if storage isn't as important, the second option is to build an ABS rack that slides right over-top of your tailgate, so that the bikes don't rest directly on the tailgate. I've seen one before, and it looked very effective.
Also, those "base-plate looking things", are toilet flanges. They're what your toilet is bolted down to, except I've got them upside-down.
I'm still not 100% sure about my rig though. I've kept the rig "removable" (ie. with a retaining bolt drilled through the flange & pipe), since it's too tall for my garage. Consequently, it does have a wee bit of wiggle & play. Under light loads/smooth roads, it should be okay, but I'm not yet certain if it will stand up to heavy loads on shuttle roads. However, I figure I can either sinch it down with straps, or, I can also ad some support beams.
